10 Things To Know Before Moving From Texas To Virginia

In 2019, almost 14,000 Texans moved to Virginia. Why does this small but vibrant state attract so many residents of the Lone Star State? Majestic mountains, a rich history and a high quality of living create a place that is a pleasure to move to. If you are planning to move from Texas to Virginia, ensure the smoothness of your transition by considering these 10 essential differences that will significantly impact your new life.

Virginia enjoys temperate weather

Texas is known for its year-round warmth and lack of snow. However, it is also known for extreme heat and, in some places, sweltering humidity during the summer. Virginia, while warmer than its northern counterparts, boasts a much more temperate climate with more clearly defined seasons and more consistent rain throughout the year.

You should also plan for variations in weather depending on where you live. Love the cooler temps? Embrace the mountains. Need a little more warmth? Try the Lexington area.

Texas enjoys a lower cost of living

Texas may be big, but its cost of living is low. Running about 6 percent lower than the national average, the state’s cost of living makes it easier to do everything from purchasing groceries to buying your dream home.

Virginia, however, has a cost of living that is more than 4 percent above the national average, and almost 10 percent higher than Texas’ expenses. That means that you will have to budget more for groceries, healthcare, housing and more.

In order to make your move less stressful, you should work out your budget before moving day. You may also want to research different areas in Virginia that may offer a lower cost of living than the pricier areas.

Virginia housing is expensive

While purchasing a home in Virginia will cost you less, on average, than doing so in states such as California or New York, housing is more expensive than Texas – By about 27 percent. That means that the biggest impact on your finances could also be one of the most important areas of your finances – Where you choose to live.

If that seems high according to your Texas standards, then you may need to plan ahead to either find more affordable housing or to find an area of the state that is less expensive than the average.

Changing your Texas license and registration is simple

Virginia offers a generous 60-day grace period to switch your Texas driving license over to a Virginia one. You will also have a 30-day period to change over your vehicle registration. As a result, you should have plenty of time to complete a process that is relatively straightforward. All you need are the following documents and directions to your closest Virginia DMV:

  • Driver’s license application
  • Proof of ID
  • Social Security number
  • Proof of residency
  • Old license
  • License fee
  • Proof of vehicle inspection
  • Proof of Virginia insurance
  • Proof that vehicle is titled in Virginia
  • Any other applicable documents and fees

As you may have noticed, there are a few steps you may need to take to update your vehicle registration in the state. Before you register your car, you MUST obtain Virginia insurance, title your vehicle in the state and get your vehicle inspected. Completing these tasks within 30 days may require you to think ahead and begin the process shortly after your relocation.

Virginia gun laws are stricter than in Texas

Texas is known for its relaxed gun laws, which make it lawful to carry a weapon openly or concealed without a permit. Restrictions focus primarily on specific conditions under which a person may be prohibited from carrying a gun.

Virginia, however, has slightly stricter laws regarding the carrying of guns. In particular, you may not carry a concealed weapon except under certain circumstances. If you want to continue to carry your weapon, you may be able to do so with a Texas concealed carry permit. While not required in Texas, it will be honored in Virginia, thanks to a reciprocity agreement between the two states.

Education thrives in Virginia

Ranked 35th in the nation in education, Texas boasts several great institutions of higher learning and some stellar public school systems. However, Virginia is known for its high-quality education that places it 11th in the nation. If you are looking for high-quality public schools, consider moving to York County, Fairfax County, or Loudoun County. If you want higher education that stands out, try the University of Virginia, William & Mary, or Virginia Tech.

Traffic is a way of life

Throughout much of the state of Virginia, rush hour congestion is a given. The state sits near Washington, D.C. and the area around the nation’s capital can become quite congested in the mornings and afternoons. Many cities within Virginia also suffer from long commute times and lots of traffic. If you hope to avoid some of these problems, make sure to do your research about where you work, where you live, and how you plan to get there. You may find that using the state’s strong public transportation system is preferable.

Virginia is home to stunning mountains

When you move from Texas to Virginia, you will immediately notice the incredible, lush greenery of the state’s mountains. Home to 8 mountain ranges, 5 peaks taller than 5,000 feet, and more than 200 miles of the famed Blue Ridge Parkway, this state will quickly turn you into a mountain lover.
